Mountain Biking Sedona, AZ
As a rock climber my winter vacations are usually dedicated to climbing trips. With a recent forearm injury I decided to keep the MTB season going a little longer. Enter a very last minute trip to Sedona, AZ.
The weekend following Thanksgiving I started frantically scouring the internet for places I could go, my week off from work was only a week away. Being that southeast weather is unpredictable this time of year I knew I wanted to go west.
After considering a few different places I settled on Sedona. Mainly because it was in the southwest and I figured it would be warm and dry. I searched around for plane tickets, a rental car, hotel, and even managed to find some decent deals.
Two trips to bike shops for a bike box later I found a box that I could fit my bike in. Travel hack, for American Airlines at least, keep the total box dimension below 126”(H+W+L) and under 50lbs and the bike flies for $30 each way! Definitely tape the box up well. Between TSA chopping it open and the airline throwing it around, the box had seen better days. By the time it made it to Phoenix it was in rough shape.
Used a whole roll of duct tape on the box for the flight back
On to the riding. Sedona’s got rocks with a side of rocks. Most of the trails I did consisted of technical rock gardens up and down with some sections of ultra smooth dust thrown in.
Sedona trails have no shortage of views along the way!
Along with the views and the rock gardens there’s some unique trail terrain.
With the temperature averaging in the mid 50’s and being cloudy most of the time my trip to Sedona didn’t quite turn out to be the warm sunny desert trip I anticipated. Nonetheless I managed to make the most of it and ride every day I was there. All in all a good time!
